Cocoon Wins At Design While Making Homes Safer

The British founders of Cocoon realized that home security was too complicated and expensive—most people in the UK and the US didn’t bother with it. So they set out to make a home security system that everyone could use. Their compact device Cocoon detects infrasonic sound waves that humans can’t hear, keeping homes safe without false alarms. Backers were inspired by this new vision of simple home security, so Cocoon was able to raise $249,860. Cocoons are now sold on Amazon and have made it to 55 countries. These young British entrepreneurs had the idea to create sunglasses that allow you to see the world through an uplifting, colored filter. The Tens team raised more than £370,000 ($453,000) from 9,300 backers and have shipped to more than 100 countries. Things got even more exciting when business magnate Richard Branson tried a pair on his kite-surfing trip to Necker Island. cuddle + kind is a social endeavor founded by Jennifer and Derek Woodgate, parents of three young children in Milton, Ontario. Their goal is to feed 1 million meals each year to children in need, providing the key nutrition necessary for children’s brains to develop fully, help fight disease and reach their full potential. The purchase of each of their handmade dolls helps feed 10 children worldwide. Since the campaign launched in September 2015, cuddle + kind smashed through their original goal of $25,000, raising over $446k and providing 62,543 meals to children in need in just 6 weeks. Canary, a New York-based consumer products company, launched an Indiegogo campaign raising almost $2 million to produce a revolutionary home security system. The organization has now raised $10 million in funding from Khosla Ventures and has begun shipping to contributors.

This father-and-son team from Australia found their passion in beekeeping, but they dreaded the hassle of extracting honey from a beehive. It required costly equipment that sometimes hurt or disturbed the bees. So the Andersons created Flow Hive to put honey on tap. Their simple idea not only is saving bees globally, but also has become the largest Indiegogo campaign of all time by raising $13.2 million. They are now shipping worldwide. See the campaign.

Sonny Vu, CEO of Misfit Wearables launched a new type of activity tracker, the Misfit Shine, and raised nearly $850,000 on Indiegogo. After using the platform to gain data and demonstrate value in the market, the Misfit Shine was delivered in August 2013 and the company also went on to raise $15.2 million in Series B funding, followed by a $40 million round in December 2014. The product can now be found at Best Buy stores, Target stores and Apple Stores across the country, and has partnered with Beddit and Victoria’s Secret.

Steve James and Kartemquin Films raised $153,875 on Indiegogo to bring Life Itself, a film about the late film critic Roger Ebert, to the world. In January 2014, the film premiered simultaneously at the Sundance Film Festival and in the homes of Indiegogo funders, livestreaming through their computers, in a first for the Sundance Institute and the film industry. Today, the film has been released in theaters across the country and has been nominated for a Critic’s Choice Movie Award.

Good Spread Peanut Butter Feeds Thousands

Mark Slagle and Alex Cox, entrepreneurs from Nashville, Tennessee, raised $69,518 on Indiegogo to take their peanut butter company, Good Spread, to the next level and produce enough for a six-month run. After mailing the final product to nearly 600 people, Slagle and Cox launched a second campaign and is now distributed by Harris Teeter, a large chain of 215 grocery stores. The peanut butter has also enabled the socially-conscious company to provide more than 33,000 packets of food to malnourished children in Central Africa.

Writer and Director Justin Simien raised more than $40,000 on Indiegogo to create the trailer for Dear White People, a film on race relations in America. The film premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and has become the highest grossing crowdfunded box office hit in history.
